Nitrates are still available for plant use- plants also use nitrites & ammonia as well. In respect to nitrite, I believe it detoxes up to as well but how it works is a closely guarded secret. Ok, to the best of my knowledge, Prime can be safely used on mulitple occasions but I honestly would let Seachem clarify this. Try your best!! I know your in a difficult situation here. The tank should be good until it gets up to 1.0 again, right?Ĭan Prime safely be used multiple days in a row to treat any new ammonia, without water changes? In other words, does it build up and cause a problem?Īlso, no info on how much nitrite it detoxes, any ideas? And does it render nitrates useless for the plant in the tank? I change out some water (how much is safe to change all at once for tropical fish?), with the new water treated with Prime. I think I have to wait at least 24 hours to get an accurate reading on the ammonia, right? Or is it 48 hours, since Prime can work up to 48 hours? Assume I don't have the fancy Seachem kit that can tell NH3 from NH4. So, let's say it's 24 hours later, and the ammonia is now 1 ppm. So as long as the ammonia doesn't go beyond 1.0, then I don't have to change the water, right? It detoxes up to 1 ppm ammonia for 24-48 hours. Part of the purpose of Prime during cycling is not to be changing water every 5 seconds during the cycling process, since you have to let some ammonia in there to get the cycling going, right? OK, so please tell me if I'm on the right track here. This is because I'm the only one who really cares, but I don't live there.

The goal is, how can I use Prime properly to keep the fish safe, while minimizing water changes at the same time, recognizing that water changes are of course unavoidable, but just trying to minimize them. So I'm really trying to understand how Prime can help during tank cycling, because changing the water twice a day, or once a day even, is not necessarily going to happen. I go there every day, but I feel like I'm sneaking around trying to help these poor fish behind his back. This is not my tank, I'm trying to help someone who is really ignorant about this, and even my attempts to educate have failed, he's very cavalier about it, and so I'm left with trying to do what I can when I'm at this person's house. I'm still trying to get a handle on the proper way to use Prime while cycling the tank with fish in it.
